Why is it sustainable?
Salandére is a set of baskets that are hand-woven out of straw and recycled clothes.
Both materials are sourced from Africa. Straw grows naturally near African swamps, whereas clothes are collected from the piles of garments that are sent to Africa once they've been discarded in other areas of the world.
These baskets give new life to trashed fabric, thus embracing a circular economy model. They also highlight a big global issue – clothes overconsumption – and show that interior design can help in tackling the effects of a problem that’s rooted in the fashion industry.
With its products, EA-Déco values traditional weaving skills. Even more, the company has opened a weaving school for young girls in African villages, creating for them an employment opportunity.
