Why is it sustainable?
The KNIXHULT lampshade is made entirely out of bamboo, a grass that grows fast and thrives without needing pesticides, fertilisers or herbicides.
But this particular lamp goes one step further.
For previous bamboo lampshades, IKEA had always specified a homogeneous light colour, which caused darker-coloured bamboo to be discarded at the factory. Instead, KNIXHULT is designed to allow for wider colour variation, causing less raw material waste.
This example shows the huge power of initial product design for sustainable development – as stated in the circular economy principle design out waste and pollution.
