Under the bell
Why is it sustainable?
Under the Bell is a lampshade made of felt derived from recycled PET bottles (up to 80% recycled fibres).
Making felt from plastic bottles is a fascinating process. First, bottles are chopped into tiny flakes and melted. The resulting paste is blown in the form of fibres, that are used to make felt sheets. Finally, the sheets are heated and pressed into a mould for shaping.
Muuto strives to embrace sustainable practices throughout the entire supply chain.
Box packaging is made from at least 65% recycled material and retail shopping bags are made from at least 90% recycled material. Aiming at eliminating plastic from packaging, Muuto has begun the discontinuation of styrofoam and has started replacing plastic bags with either reusable dust bags or paper bags.
Also, Muuto is now testing a take-back program from one particular product – the Fiber Chair – that recycles old chairs into new ones.
