Why is it sustainable?
Indus is a bowl made entirely out of mango wood. Mango trees are initially planted for their fruits and are cut down when they stop producing them. Using this wood to make other products is a sustainable move as it gives a new life to an existing material. On top of that, this attaches a much higher value to timber from cut-down trees and allows farmers to get an additional income out of it.
This bowl is handmade by artisans working under fair conditions. In particular, Nkuku has chosen to work with suppliers that are starting off in their fair trade journey. By supporting them, Nkuku is contributing to the creation of ethical and sustainable (in the sense that it can be sustained over time) employment for local artisans living in India and around the world.
Nkuku strives to become always more sustainable in all areas. For instance, it uses mainly recycled (and recyclable) corrugated cardboard boxes for shipping and is continuously re-evaluating its shipment policies to find ways that are even more eco-friendly.
